The Opportunity Show co-sponsors gathering of Social Entrepreneurs
By Mark Monchek − September 23, 2009
Last Tuesday (9/15), 150 Social entrepreneurs, institutional and individual investors, foundations, socially responsible venture firms, wealth managers, and nonprofit leaders came together at the Desmond Tutu Center in NYC to find opportunities to do well by doing good. The event was hosted by Criterion Ventures. If you think this is small group of do-gooders or a fad, think again. The community of businesses, organizations and people in the US who believe business is the most powerful force for making the world better is already huge and growing fast. Socially responsible investing alone is a booming industry. The total dollars under management by U.S. funds specializing in this strategy more than quadrupled between 1995 and 2007 , from $639 billion to $2.7 trillion. And this is only one part of the Doing Well by Doing Good community.
Here are a few amazing projects featured at the event:
-Criterion Ventures, the event’s host, is working with Trinity Church Wall Street to raise a new generation of individuals committed to service as a way of life.
-2Tor is leading a program called “My Teacher, My Hero,” which centers around filming personal tributes to teachers who have made a powerful impact on their students.
-Roger Frank and his firm Benchmark Asset Managers are investing millions in social ventures in the US. and around the world.
-Starting Bloc educates, empowers and connects emerging leaders to drive positive social change.
Join us in building this dynamic and powerful community. We will host a followup to this event soon. Be on the look-out for our next event.
